DON’T BE A QUITTER

-

iS iT really worth giving up . . . social media?

‘ THERE is an association between social media use and mental health issues,’ says Professor Brian Primack, director of the Centre for Research on Media, Technology and Health at the University of Pittsburgh.

His study last year showed people who used social media for two hours a day were two to three times as likely to have depression or anxiety as those who logged on for half-an-hour or less.

‘ Some people get the impression that everybody is having a great time and their own lives don’t match up,’ said Professor Primack.

One theory is that people who feel depressed and anxious tend to use more social media.

Another study suggests checking social media 30 minutes before bed results in a 60 per cent rise in disturbed sleep.
