Minds boggled at my trapped toggle
READING about the correspondent who caught his tie in a safe door (Peterborough), I was reminded of my embarrassing moment. I had left my much-loved turquoise Ford Fiesta for a service at a garage and picked it up after work to begin my drive home along the busy A143. A few miles into my journey, I noticed that the bonnet was not secured down, so I pulled into a lay-by, leant over the bonnet and pushed hard until I heard it click shut. I was wearing a rather becoming multi-coloured quilted jacket with wooden toggles, one of which had got caught between the bonnet and the car body. Traffic was streaming by as I bent there, unable to move or to remove my jacket. The gap at the front of the car was slightly wider, so I edged along, bent double, forcing the toggle along the gap until I could give an almighty pull and the toggle came free. I wonder what on earth the passing motorists thought I was doing? I owned that pretty little car for many years. It was always my favourite. The jacket went to the charity shop.
