BILLIONAIRE SOROS GIVES ANOTHER £400,000 TO PRO-EU CAMPAIGNERS
EUROPHILE billionaire George Soros has handed another £400,000 to the pro-EU campaign group Best For Britain.
Mr Soros – who became notorious as the speculator who ‘broke’ the Bank of England in 199 when he earned £1billion by betting that sterling would be devalued – doubled the amount he has already given the organisation.
In total, he has now given £800,000 to a group openly campaigning for a second referendum to reverse the 016 decision to leave the EU.
The revelation comes just months after it emerged that Mr Soros had hosted a secret meeting in Chelsea aimed at overturning Brexit. He had previously donated £400,000 through his Open Society Foundations to the pro-Remain group, which was set up almost a year ago with the goal of ‘fighting to keep the door open to EU membership’.
The donation was revealed by the news website BuzzFeed.
Earlier this year, a crowdfunding campaign raised £100,000 for Best For Britain, which Mr Soros pledged to match.
Now it has emerged he has donated that amount plus an extra £300,000.
Patrick Gaspard, of Open Society Foundations, told BuzzFeed of its backing for Best For Britain, adding it was giving ‘a further £400,000 to their campaign for a meaningful vote on the final Brexit proposal’.
