Rosy future for KitKat fans as pink bar hits UK

- Innovation: The new KitKat By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Editor

A PINK Kit Kat made with ‘ruby chocolate’ is coming to Britain.

The main ingredient, described as the ‘ ‘fourth type’ of chocolate, is said to give a different flavour compared with milk, dark or white versions. Its creators say ruby chocolate it is not bitter, milky or sweet, but offers both a natural berry fruitiness and smoothness.

After a successful debut in Japan and Korea in January, the ruby chocolate KitKat will now go on sale in Britain.

However, the cost of enjoying the new type of chocolate comes with a 42 per cent price premium. Stores are expected to charge 85p, compared with 60p for the conventional version.

Nestle UK said British chocolate lovers will be the first in Europe to try the bar, which will be sold in Tesco from April 16.

Ruby chocolate has been developed by the Swiss company Barry Callebaut in conjunction with university academics.

It is made from the ruby cocoa bean, which gives it an intense taste and its characteristic reddish colour.

The beans are grown around the world but the firm is the first to devise a method to turn them into chocolate.
