Bin there, worn that! The £650 ‘plastic bag’ top

- By Alisha Rouse

ANYONE able to splash out £650 on a single garment would probably expect their skin to be caressed by the finest of fabrics.

But this neon green shirt by Spanish fashion house Balenciaga is 100 per cent polyethylene – the same plastic used to make carrier bags, bottles and cling film. The top, which the brand has called its ‘Plastic-Bin shirt’, features the label’s name on the front and back in gold lettering.

It is not the first time Balenciaga appears to have taken inspiration from everyday plastic products. Last year it released a £1,650 blue leather handbag that bore an uncanny resemblance to Ikea’s 40p shopping bags.

It unveiled its new shirt on the 2018 spring and summer catwalk in Paris. It is now selling for £645 at Selfridges – where it is almost sold out.

Latex and plastic is all the rage in fashion circles currently, with luxury brands Celine and Chanel showcasing see-through bags and boots in recent months.
