Trailblazing women

-

AMANDA PLATELL says she ‘would be incensed if some lady with a spanner turned up to mend her car’ (Mail).

She apologises for her viewpoint to the ‘very few female AA mechanics’, but not to any other female mechanics.

Is she not aware that during World War II women were wielding spanners and screwdrivers in factories building bomber and fighter aircraft? At one time, there were few female doctors, lawyers or journalists. Ms Platell has benefited from all the women who paved the way for her.

I was at a British Gas tour for technical jobs for women when a mother questioned how ‘7st 17-year- olds could place a radiator on a wall’. It’s that kind of prejudice women have had to battle against. O. ROBERTS, Cardiff.
