- By RIATH AL-SAMARRAI

AFTeR the anger of one blown opportunity, Ben Proud capitalised on his second shot at gold by winning the 50m freestyle. Proud, 23, was livid after being called for a false start in his 50m butterfly heat last Thursday — a discipline he was expected to dominate as reigning world champion. But he made amends by defending his freestyle title in 21.35sec. It was slower than the Games record of 21.30 he set in the heats, but Proud said: ‘Last night was about the time — this was all about the medal. It’s been a really special night.’ he was also part of the 4 x 100m medley team with Adam Peaty, James Guy and Luke Greenbank who came within 0.09sec of gold, only to be pipped by Australia. england’s harry Tanfield, the brother of individual pursuit champion Charlie, took silver in the men’s cycling individual time trial. he said: ‘My brother’s got two medals, so I had to answer that somehow.’ english duo Parag Patel and David Luckman won gold in the Queen’s Prize Pairs shooting. Robert Pitcairn, a 79-year-old from Canada who was the oldest athlete to make his debut at the Games, came eighth. Meanwhile, Crohn’s disease sufferer Ali Jawad — who is nicknamed ‘The Showman’ — produced one of the most passionate celebrations of the Games, screaming to the heavens after winning bronze for england in the para-powerlifting lightweight division. Jawad, who missed large chunks of 2017 due to a flare-up of his Crohn’s, said he feared his career was ‘pretty much over last year’. ‘I have only been training for six weeks so to perform like that was incredible,’ he said. ‘I had to think of the dark times to inspire me.’ Anna hursey, the 11-yearold table tennis prodigy from Wales, has exited the singles at the group stage.
