How painting our homes has made us happier

- By Tom Payne

IT MAY only have taken a few coats of paint but, with a bit of working together, these neighbours have transformed their drab suburban street into a row of vivid Victorian terraced homes.

Families on Nettleton Road say the splash of colour has brought them together as well.

Landlord Tash Frootko, who owns two of the homes, came up with the idea of painting the houses different colours in order to reflect the diversity of the street. The artist, 39, said: ‘I started painting the two properties I own and spoke to the neighbours who were on board with the plan.

‘Within days the area was glowing and full of life as passers-by stopped to marvel at the changes.’

The multicoloured homes now resemble the pastel-painted streets of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and Totterdown in Bristol. Karen Green, 50, has lived on the Gloucester street for more than 25 years. The teaching assistant said: ‘It’s a lot different because everyone on the street is smiling at one another. You can feel a real positive energy.’

Latvian Karlis Kozlovskis, 63, who has lived on Nettleton Road for 16 years, added: ‘It is great for the people here and for people passing by.

‘It’s a good feeling and I’m pleased to see my neighbours smiling.’
