Charlie Chaplin said he will never return to America, after handing over his re-entry permit to the U.S. Vice-Consul in Geneva. The Justice Department had posted a ‘stop’ order against him at all U.S. ports [because of his alleged ‘subversive’, leftwing activities]. The Chaplins have made their permanent home in Switzerlan­d.

April 16, 1957

TWO rival gangs of Teddy Boys fought with knives on the top of a crowded No 60 bus last night. The driver took the bus to Cricklewoo­d Garage, Edgware Road, and a 999 call brought police cars. Two youths were later arrested.
