Warning to Saints: You’re never too good to go down

-

THE last time Southampton were relegated from the Premier League was in 2005. I was part of that squad and some people thought we were too good to go down because there was me, Peter Crouch, Kevin Phillips and others, but that’s not how football works.

Our 33rd league game — 13 years ago today — was against Aston Villa and we were 2-0 up at half-time. Then we collapsed in the second half and lost 3-2... just like Southampton did against Chelsea on Saturday.

Mark Hughes’s side are mirroring the last time the club went down. They are not a bad team but they have won only five games all season. Now, just like we did, they have five league games left to save themselves. They have a look of relegation about them.
