Macron’s U-turn on Trump claims

EMMANUEL Macron was yesterday forced to backtrack on claims he had managed to change Donald trump’s mind on withdrawing troops from Syria.

earlier this month the President declared US forces would ‘be coming out of Syria very soon’. But on Sunday, the french President claimed credit for ‘convincing’ him to stay in Syria for the ‘long term’. the White House then said the American mission ‘has not changed’ – prompting Mr Macron to claim he ‘never said’ the US or france would stay engaged long-term in a military sense.
