Ready for their war on litter, the first recruits

-

TOWN councillor Sue Helliwell is among the many readers who have been inspired to organise a plastic pick up.

Ten others will be joining the 55year-old to help clean up the Cheshire town of Alsager.

Sue said she was keen to get involved with her daughter Amelia after noticing most of the litter in her local park and town centre tended to be plastic bottles and bags.

She said: ‘I read the article and thought what a great idea. My 15year-old daughter is going to join me and I think she’s going to see if she can get her school involved too.’

Commending the Mail for highlighting the dangers of plastic, she said: ‘Though we are lucky there isn’t an awful lot of litter here, what we do mostly find is plastic bags and plastic bottles.’

HR adviser Beverly Ayling, 52, is also signing up people to do a litter pick between Grove and Wantage in Oxfordshire. She said: ‘As soon as I saw the campaign in the paper on Saturday, I joined up and will be pleased to be one small part of a much bigger campaign.’
