IVAN MAUGER, considered to be the best speedway rider ever, has died at his home on Australia’s Gold Coast aged 78. He had been suffering from dementia. The New Zealander (right) won the World Championship six times during a golden era in the 1960s and 1970s.

NIKI LAUDA has appeared to dismiss the possibility of Daniel Ricciardo joining Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. Ricciardo, winner of the Chinese Grand Prix, is out of contract at Red Bull at the end of the season and has been linked with Mercedes and Ferrari. But Mercedes chairman Lauda said: ‘Valtteri Bottas did a perfect job on Sunday. other than for Red Bull’s strategy trick with the tyres, he would have won.
