Germaine’s not alone in her doubts

-

GERMAINE GREER finds herself in hot water (yet again) for daring to suggest that life for Meghan Markle in the Royal Family might turn out to be less than perfect.

‘I think the pressure to escape from the Firm is crushing,’ declared Greer — a staunch Republican — adding: ‘I think she’ll bolt.’

A bit harsh, I’m sure, but, judging by many letters I am sent by Mail readers, she’s not alone in her doubts. Some are put off by Harry and Meghan’s almost saccharine desire to be loved, what with their Willy Wonkastyle golden ticket wedding invitations for ‘ordinary people’ and that virtue-signalling gift list (no presents, just money to charity).

Others — more wisely, perhaps — point to the track record of the Royal Family, which is littered with break-ups. After all, three out of the Queen’s four children have had failed marriages, not to mention the extra-marital antics of both her sister Margaret and their uncle Edward VIII.

Whatever advantages belonging to the Royal Family brings, it’s clear there are also some serious challenges. Challenges that may require rather more than a movie star smile and a nose for a good photo opportunity.
