Double date for Gosden star names

- MARCUS TOWNEND Racing Correspondent reports from Newmarket

Trainer John Gosden says his star horses — Cracksman and enable — could clash in both the King George Vi and Queen elizabeth Stakes at ascot in July and the Prix de L’arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October. Filly enable won both races last year in a five-race Group One winning sequence but Cracksman finished as the higher-rated horse thanks to a seven-length success in ascot’s Champion Stakes. enable, who races in the colours of owner Khaled abdullah, will make her season comeback in either the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on May 27 or, more likely, in the Coronation Cup on Derby Day at epsom (June 2). Cracksman, owned by anthony Oppenheimer, is being prepared for a comeback in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp on May 13. The son of Frankel, ridden by Frankie Dettori, pulled clear of stablemate Master Singer in a work-out before racing at newmarket yesterday. Gosden said: ‘He is a much stronger horse this year. Going into the epsom and irish Derbies, he was still very much like a 14-year-old kid. ‘He is more like a solid 24-year-old now. That’s a bit different from the young adolescent which was racing last year.’ Gosden, successful with Dettori-ridden Purser at newmarket in the British ebf bet365 Conditions Stakes yesterday, runs nawassi in this afternoon’s nell Gwyn Stakes. He also fields racing Post Trophy runner-up roaring Lion, the 6-1 third favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, in tomorrow’s Craven Stakes.

GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, nicknamed the ‘Iron Horse’ because of his battling racing style, has died aged 21. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was a six-time Group One winner who never finished out of the first two in 13 starts. His wins included the Coral-Eclipse, Sussex and International Stakes.
