Deadly tombstoning craze is back
IT took only the first real taste of summer... and children chose to risk their lives tombstoning off a notorious spot in Devon.
Youngsters plunged 65ft into the sea close to rocks at Dead Man’s Cove off Plymouth Hoe.
Only 18 months ago, a father of three died performing the high-risk stunt at the spot. In 2010, a teenager was paralysed when he broke his neck in three places jumping off a wall at the same cove.
Simon Fewins, 44, a warehouse manager from Plymouth, saw about 20 boys and girls on the rocks.
Mr Fewins, who was with daughter Maisie, ten, said: ‘Just four lads were jumping. All they have to do is slip, there’s a flat bit you can jump from but you have to clear the rocks. If you misjudge the run up you’re dead. The water, in my opinion, isn’t deep enough for a jump like that, there’s probably just enough water to keep them from sustaining injury.’
