Wenger tips Vieira takeover

- By ADAM CRAFTON

ARSENE WENGER has tipped Patrick Vieira as his long-term heir but says the former Arsenal captain will need higher level experience first.

Sportsmail revealed yesterday the board are looking at the 41year-old New York City coach as a future boss. Wenger said: ‘He works in New York and for Man City. He’s a guy who has potential one day. I’ve followed his managerial career. He does well. There are plenty of former players who played here who have potential and the intelligence and the knowledge to do it. So there’s plenty of choice.’ Asked if it will be his decision if he carries on next season, Wenger said: ‘That doesn’t really matter. My main worry is Arsenal. When the results aren’t as good as everybody wants, people ask that question. I cannot master that. I can only master my commitment and I do.’ Meanwhile, Arsenal may offer Santi Cazorla a new contract despite the Spaniard not having played since October 2016 after a series of serious injuries. His deal is up this summer. Wenger said. ‘We miss him a lot. He is an exceptional footballer. It is very sad. Can he play again? I hope yes.’
