JOSE MUST DO MORE TO HELP POG SUCCEED

- MARTIN KEOWN

PAUL POGBA wants to create, to make things happen. When Manchester United were playing with freedom at the start of the season and beating teams by four goals almost every week, Pogba was hailed as central to the team’s success. While he was injured, United lost momentum and on his return he, like the rest of the team, had his wings clipped. Under Jose Mourinho, it is all about the team, so this focus on Pogba must drive him mad. For United’s manager, Pogba is just another player and he will feel he does not have to justify whether the midfielder plays. I do not know if he will ever be the player Mourinho wants him to be. Yet given the fee and that the club stuck their neck out to re-sign him, Jose must work harder to make a success of Pogba. He is a master at getting the best from players — just look

at the 20 major trophies he has won. He usually gets it right but when he does not, it can go spectacularly wrong. Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne thrived after being let go by Mourinho, but he would argue that he made the right decision at the time. If Pogba is not giving him what he wants now, he will not play. If he is not playing, it would not come as a surprise if he left in the summer. Mourinho has to do more to make a success of Pogba or admit that this move did not work out for either party.
