IVAN TONEY
WHAT HAS HE GOT?
A FEW seasons ago, circumstances forced Northampton to accept a fee from Newcastle for this centre forward. At the time he could be described as a promising player lacking strength and pace. Watching him for Scunthorpe now — after seeing him during a loan spell at Wigan earlier r in the year — I sense he is coming to terms with regular league football. Recently he has been on a good scoring run, six in 10 games, mes, and his confidence has clearly grown. I like the way he faces up to receive in the middle third and lays off the ball and spins to take up goalscoring positions in the penalty area. He appears to have been receptive to good coaching, keeping it simple before getting away from his marker. When his wide man released a quick cross, Toney (above) was there in a flash, on top of the goalkeeper, who spilled the effort and watched as the striker moved in to score. He also showed intelligence in his positional play and when his team lost the ball he showed no laziness. He is aware of his responsibilities.
WHAT DOES HE NEED?
HE did not show any obvious burst of speed but he has got stronger. On one occasion he held his own in a foot race with a more experienced centre back. In the second half of this game, the service to him lessened as the opponents tightened on him. I noticed that he wore gloves on what was not a cold day. However, I have learned over time not to let such things prejudice my view of a player. I know of one manager who was put off by players with beards! Toney is tall enough to make important challenges in the air but had no opportunity to do so on this occasion. His best chances came from good positioning in the box to receive low crosses. On the day his team had a great first half and he was outstanding. He will need no reminding that consistency is key but he certainly has something.
