Everyone’s talking about . . .

FROZEN GRAPES

- Compiled by Mark Palmer

HOW come they’re in the news? Because they’re Victoria Beckham’s snack of choice and are served in fashionable restaurants.

POSH never looks very happy. She certainly seems more of a sour grapes person...

YES, so let’s hope the frozen version will warm her up a little.

WON’T they make her put on weight?

NO, THAT’S the point. They are part of her stick-insect diet — which means not eating much at all. VB’s general rule is to eat only something the size of her fist, to avoid ‘stretching out’ [using] her stomach.

PERHAPS she binges when no one’s looking or on special occasions...

NO CHANCE. This week, she celebrated her 44th birthday with a carb-free watermelon and berries ‘cake’.

IF THAT’S her idea of a party, what on earth is her normal diet?

The day starts with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Breakfast is a sprouted ‘cereal’ of wheat, barley, beans, lentils, spelt, millet and almond milk. Lunch is spinach and salt. Dinner: Prawns with a radish and lettuce salad and lemon juice.

ANY desserts?

YES, that’s where frozen grapes come in. They’re said to be Mrs Beckham’s guilty pleasure. They first became the talk of trendy bars and food forums a few years ago. Weight Watchers members recommended them as an alternative to ice cream and Jamie Oliver created a dessert of chocolate, grappa and frozen grapes.

SURELY a frozen grape is as hard as a snooker ball?

DON’T be daft. They’re only put in the freezer for an hour or so. But dieters prefer them to be harder so they last longer. One fan tweeted: ‘They make your brain light up like a bonfire.’

DO THEY count towards your fruit and vegetable five-a-day?

YOU’D need to gobble a lot, as nutritionists suggest one serving amounts to 32 small seedless grapes.

WILL they become mainstream?

I DOUBT they’ll catch on in Sheffield, Newcastle and Glasgow but hipster Londoners can’t get enough. Harry’s Dolce Vita restaurant in Knightsbridge serves a cheese board ‘with truffled honey, Sardinian crispbread and iced grapes’ for £8.50, while The Vault bar in Soho uses them in ice cubes for its ‘Grape Escape’ cocktail.
