ASPARAGUS SEASON

After warm weather, asparagus should be sprouting freely. Gather the spears as they appear. Use a knife to cut each just below ground level. Don’t cut too deeply, though as that could damage the plant. It’s traditiona­l to gather asparagus spears until the longest day, usually June 21. To boost future yields, feed soil after gathering your last spears. Scatter slow-release fertiliser such as bonemeal over the bed or along the rows. rain will wash the nutrients in. Should weeds appear, remove them by hand.
