ASPARAGUS SEASON

After warm weather, asparagus should be sprouting freely. Gather the spears as they appear. Use a knife to cut each just below ground level. Don’t cut too deeply, though as that could damage the plant. It’s traditional to gather asparagus spears until the longest day, usually June 21. To boost future yields, feed soil after gathering your last spears. Scatter slow-release fertiliser such as bonemeal over the bed or along the rows. rain will wash the nutrients in. Should weeds appear, remove them by hand.
