BLUES HERO BENTLEY DIES AT 93

FORMER Chelsea captain Roy Bentley has died. He was 93. Bentley (below), a striker who won the 1955 league title, spent eight years with the Blues, scoring 150 goals in 367 appearance­s. He made his Chelsea debut in 1948 in a 4-2 home defeat by Huddersfie­ld after signing for the e club for £11,000. 00. He went on to o be the Blues’ top scorer in the 1949-50 season and replaced Johnny Harris s as captain in 1951. ‘A Chelsea legend in the truest sense of the word, his importance in the club’s story never has, and never will be, forgotten,’ said the club in a statement. Bentley also played for Newcastle, Fulham and QPR. He scored nine goals in 12 England appearance­s and played at the 1950 World Cup. Bentley also managed Reading and Swansea.
