Kylie at 50: I’m more likely to become a step-mum than have children of my own

SHE turns 50 next month, childless after a string of failed romances. Now Kylie Minogue has said she thinks she is more likely to become a stepmother than have a family of her own.

The singer, who recently revealed marriage ‘simply isn’t for her’, split from her fiance, British actor Joshua Sasse, last year following claims he had been unfaithful.

In a new interview, Miss Minogue says she considered having children without a partner following the split, but had now decided she is happier being an aunt to sister Dannii’s son Ethan, who is seven.

She told Vogue Australia: ‘I did pursue that [ having children alone]. That obviously wasn’t the path for me, either. But, I think now I love being an auntie.

‘And I mean, if I was to meet anyone – that sounds really gloomy – but if there’s one person on the planet Earth who might like me and I might like them, the chances are pretty high that that person would have children anyway … So I think it’s more [likely] in that vein, than having children of my own.’

She told the magazine she had been ‘deluded’ in thinking her relationship with Sasse, who is 19 years her junior, would work out. She said she thought their romance ‘needed saving’ at first, before realising it was time to end it.

‘I think we all know that things were not going great in my relationship, but when you’re kind of deluded and you’re thinking maybe, maybe … maybe this needs saving. Turns out, it didn’t,’ she said.

The Australian star, who recently released her 14th studio album, Golden, said she is ‘ very happy’ being single after rediscovering herself. She said: ‘Literally, that’s been and gone but I appreciated everyone’s kind thoughts [after the split]. That does seem like another life. I really just built up, regained my sense of self, I was like, “Oh yeah this is me, this is who I am”.

‘I was very happily single when I wrote them [the tracks on her album]. Like, very happily single. The grass is always greener isn’t it? It isn’t, we tend to think it is. Honestly, it’s just not [a break-up album] – what it became about was me and my life and where I am in my life and the lessons I’ve learnt.’

Miss Minogue has enjoyed a series of long relationships with dashing, and often younger, men.

But speaking to Red Magazine this month, she said: ‘I never thought I would get married.

‘Just going through “being engaged” seems like an experiment, because I’d never as a girl or in all my life had a vision of getting married. It’s not something I needed or wanted. My parents never brought me up with the idea of “the big marriage”.

‘I never had it as a goal. I thought, “Maybe I’ve got it all wrong and I should go for it. Maybe I should do what most of the world do. It works for them”. Now I’m going to stick to my previous view. I don’t think marriage is for me.’

Before Sasse, she had a five-year relationship with model Andres Velencoso, 40, but they split over conflicting work schedules.

She also dated French actor Olivier Martinez, 52, with whom she is rumoured to have spent time again since her break-up with Sasse. The pair were in a relationship for five years before splitting in 2007. Martinez, who was married to James Bond actress Halle Berry between 2013 and 2016, had helped Miss Minogue through her battle with breast cancer.

Perhaps her most public romance was with Jason Donovan, whom she dated for three years after meeting on the set of Neighbours. However, she left him to date INXS singer Michael Hutchence for two years, with the pair remaining friends until his death in 1997.
