NOW JOIN THE MAIL’S GREAT PLASTIC PICK UP

THOUSANDS of readers have rallied behind our Great Plastic Pick Up campaign to help clear Britain’s streets, parks and beaches of plastic.

In an event organised by the Daily Mail with Keep Britain Tidy, communitie­s will come together on May 11-13.

Since its launch nine days ago, 8,044 people have signed up, with 350 Pick Ups set to take place across the country.

There is still plenty of time to join the army of volunteers, and you can win amazing prizes. Here’s everything you need to know . . .

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

The Great Plastic Pick Up will run from the start of Friday, May 11, to the end of Sunday, May 13. Communitie­s will pick up rubbish, with a specific mission to remove the plastic poisoning our public areas.

WIN A SPRING CLEAN

A Daily Mail team will scour photos sent by Pick Up groups and select three winners of a profession­al cleaning for their local area worth £10,000.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Go to greatplast­icpickup.org and give your details. Anyone can join in, but children should be accompanie­d by an adult.

The first 3,000 events to sign up will be sent 30 recycled bags for collecting plastic, plus we have 450,000 Pick Up bags that participan­ts will be able to collect from their local councils.

HOW DO I START A PICK UP?

Sign up on greatplast­icpickup.

org and work out where and when to hold your event. You’ll be asked if it’s just for family and friends, or whether you are happy for others to join. Public Pick Ups will appear on a map on the website.

HOW CAN I KEEP INFORMED?

Follow the #GreatPlast­icPickUp hashtag on Twitter and stay up to date in the Daily Mail.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

Gather at the set time, check in with the organiser and get picking! Grab any litter and put:

Plastic bottles and lids in blue bags (with caps and labels); Metal cans in the red bags; Anything else in white sacks.

WHAT CAN’T I PICK UP?

Never touch syringes, broken glass or large fly-tipped items; instead, tell your council. Do not pick litter near busy roads.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Organisers should log the number of litter bags on greatplast­icpickup. – and check the website for details of local recycling facilities. Post your pictures on Twitter with the #GreatPlast­icPickUp hashtag. Organisers can upload photos on the website.

WHERE WILL THE BAGS GO?

Plastic bottles and metal cans will be recycled into new ones. Waste will be incinerate­d in a facility generating electricit­y.
