Women over 40 shouldn’t wear frills, says former Vogue chief

- Daily Mail Reporter

AS the editor of Vogue, she inspired women to experiment with different fashions. But Alexandra Shulman has said there are some styles that older women should never, ever wear.

The 60-year-old, who edited Vogue for 25 years, says frills, flounces and bows are ‘completely unacceptable’ for the over-40s.

‘You might think that the high necklines, wide sleeves, patterned fabrics and long hemlines of so many dresses ... would be ideal for both older and younger women. But there you would be wrong,’ she wrote in the Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine.

‘The one thing that looks frightful as you age is a swamp of frilly fabric.

‘Tiers, flounces and bows are possibly the only things that I regard as completely unacceptable in ageless style, not working for most people past the age of two – and over the age of 40, bringing dodgy reference to Bette Davis’s Baby June.’

Whether her advice is taken on board by Nicole Kidman, 50, who wore a frilly green number in LA earlier this year, remains to be seen.
