WITHOUT a clock on the route in Chicago to let him know how close he was to world-record pace, British runner Steve Jones fell millisecon­ds short of Carlos Lopes’s time of 2hr 7min 12sec. Lopes had beaten the Welshman’s old record six months earlier, but Jones’s time of 2hr 7min 13sec in 1985 set a British record that would stand for 33 years — and earned him a cheque for £41,000
