Commonwealth not fearing Brexit

COMMONWEALTH countries are eager to trade more with Britain and are not concerned by Brexit, a City official has revealed.

Catherine McGuinness, policy chairman at the City of London Corporation, said she spoke to scores of industry and political leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum in the capital last week and was asked just once about Britain’s exit from the European Union.

She added Brexit has led to more focus on building trade links with our historic partners in the 53-state organisation, and she believes they are keen to embrace stronger ties. ‘We’re obsessed with Brexit in this country and the rest of the world wants to get on with life,’ she said.

She said the corporation – which champions London around the world – is keen to forge closer relationships with Commonwealth countries as well as China and the rest of Asia: ‘Brexit is irrelevant to it – it’s work we would be doing anyway.’
