Bin bad ideas

GUERNSEY is planning to charge households per bag of rubbish (Mail).

Councils have tried everything from giving us a huge selection of recycling containers for every type of rubbish to reducing collections to once every three weeks.

Why don’t councils on the Continent have the same problems with rubbish? Instead, most have weekly collections and in some places they are daily.

COLIN BOWER, Nottingham. ONE of the reasons why fly tipping has increased (Mail) is because of the exorbitant cost of using council tips.

It seems the only way politicians have of trying to resolve an issue is to introduce a fine or a charge. They haven’t the skills required for complex problem-solving.

Why can’t they revert back to allowing people to use public tips for free or a small charge? Weren’t recycling centres introduced to prevent fly-tipping? MIKE CATTERALL, Accrington, Lancs. LOCALS in the holiday resort of Famagusta in Cyprus look at us strangely when my wife and I walk along the beach collecting discarded plastic. We wade into the clear, blue sea collecting ever-increasing amounts of litter.

We do this because we were so upset after finding a dead sea turtle surrounded by plastic rubbish.

It’s all very well for Britain to come up with policies to tackle plastic waste, but what about the rest of the world?
