JOHN Lewis chairman Charlie Mayfield was paid £ 1.4m last year – forgoing his bonus for the second year in a row.

Mayfield, who lives with wife Elizabeth and their three children in Berkshire, also had his pay frozen for the second year after profits at the group plunged 77pc last year to £103.9m. It meant employees, shareholders in the John Lewis Partnership, had their bonus slashed to 5pc – the lowest since 1954. But Mayfield’s hourly earnings were 68 times higher than the average shop-floor worker.
