NEWCASTLE’S AARONS FACES JAIL FOR BRAWL
NEWCASTLE winger Rolando Aarons has been warned he faces jail after pleading guilty to affray. The 22-year-old and a group of friends, as well as his mother, were involved in a brawl with at least five men in a Newcastle bar in October 2016. Bottles were thrown and weapons used during the 90-second altercation and Aarons, his mother Joan Jacob, 46, and four others were subsequently charged with violent disorder. Yesterday they admitted a lesser charge of affray but Judge Edward Bindloss told Newcastle Crown Court that custodial sentences are a possibility. He said: ‘All options remain open, including an immediate custodial sentence. This was a serious incident with personal violence being used and items being thrown.’ They will be sentenced on May 22. Aarons has spent the second half of this campaign on loan at Hellas Verona in Italy.
FRAN KIRBY is the Football Writers’ Association first ever Women’s Footballer of the Year. The Chelsea and England striker, 24, said: ‘The FWA introducing this award shows how far women’s football has come.’ SUNDERLAND have suffered a second relegation in 48 hours after their Under 23s were demoted to Division Two of the Premier League 2 competition. However, owner Ellis Short won’t allow the club to enter administration despite his desire to sell.
