SALAH’S A SERIOUS BALLON D’OR CONTENDER

- Martin Keown and Chris Sutton

WHEN was the last time you can remember a player at an English club having a season as incredible as this? With 43 goals in just 47 games, Mohamed Salah has eclipsed Cristiano Ronaldo’s greatest season in England when he got 42 for Manchester United in 2007-2008 . . . and Mo has still got at least four games to go! I was anticipating a battle of the hotshots between Salah and Edin Dzeko but it was no contest. I felt sorry for the Roma striker, whose side left him isolated. Despite feeding off scraps, he still got his side what could be a vital away goal. Salah, by contrast, gave a performance that summed up his remarkable season. His first goal was inch-perfect. It was such a measured finish. The second was so nonchalant and you feel he could execute anything he puts his mind to. Yet Salah is not greedy. On a hat-trick in the second half, he chose to set up Sadio Mane, then Roberto Firmino. Such is his influence that when he went off, Liverpool lost their way. No one has scored more goals than Salah across Europe in all competitions this season. When you are dominating games at this level, you have to be considered a serious Ballon d’Or contender.
