Sweden’s vibrant capital city, and home of ABBA, sits across 14 islands with a magical archipelago beyond. Excursions include a coach trip via Djugarden – the ‘playground island’ – to the Vasa museum, to see the restored 17th-century Swedish battleship that sank on its maiden voyage. Or take a scenic drive through the colourful old town of Gamla Stan, via the Royal Palace and Great Square, then head back for Viking action at the exhibition in the Museum of National Antiquities.
