Rap for BBC pundit over betting tweet
FOOTBALL pundit Robbie Savage has been warned by the BBC for promoting gambling firms hours before he covered a match for the corporation.
The former player, 43, was a commentator for Radio 5 Live’s coverage of Tuesday’s tie between Liverpool and Roma.
But before the game, Savage promoted William Hill to his 1.8million Twitter followers, with links to the bookmaker’s website. Justyn Larcombe, a consultant for gambling charities, said Savage was encouraging ‘destructive’ behaviour.
BBC editorial guidelines say pundits should take care when promoting products such as gambling. A BBC spokesman said Savage was aware his work for the corporation should not overlap with on-air commitments and had been ‘reminded of his responsibilities’.
Savage did not respond to a request for comment.
