Follow-up
THE ‘bargain’ watch bought on holiday that was more expensive than at the jeweller’s back home (Peterborough) reminded me of my cousin Gerry’s first trip abroad.
The night before he was due to go home, he met a man in a bar who told him he could take Gerry to a shop selling prestige watches cheaply and get him back in time for his flight.
Next morning, Gerry was taken to a lock-up garage. After haggling, he was delighted with his watch, which was giftwrapped. Back home, Gerry showed off his new watch to his mum. ‘It’s top-of-the-range, but I only paid a couple of hundred for it,’ he boasted.
‘very nice, dear,’ she replied. ‘It’s just a pity it doesn’t have any hands.’ M. Springer, Reading, Berks.
