Mitrovic puts Fulham back in promotion slot

FuLHaM owner Shahid Khan may be buying Wembley but he wants his club to avoid having to visit the stadium in their pursuit of the Premier League.

Fulham came from behind to beat chris coleman’s Sunderland last night and pile the pressure on cardiff, their competitors for the final automatic promotion place.

it was aleksandar Mitrovic, the striker on loan from Newcastle, who completed the turnaround as Fulham try to steer clear of the play-offs.

Mitrovic has now scored 12 goals in 13 games and he left Fulham’s supporters singing: ‘cardiff city, we’re coming for you.’ Neil Warnock’s cardiff side now trail by two points and travel to Hull today.

Fulham appeared nervous under the Friday night floodlights. Sunderland did not look too bothered about going forward but nevertheless scored in the 28th minute and an upset was on the cards.

Joel asoro, on his 19th birthday, turned Matt Targett then shot from distance. The ball slid beyond Marcus Bettinell on the slick surface.

it was a goal that would have been celebrated in cardiff as a Fulham loss would have left Warnock’s team one win away from confirming automatic promotion. But the home side levelled just before the break with a move that exemplified their pleasing passing style before the ball was buried by Lucas Piazon.

Sunderland were furious. They felt ovie Ejaria had been brought down in the box before Fulham’s break- away but referee Peter Bankes showed no sympathy.

it was all Fulham in the second half and Mitrovic sealed the win with a header.

over to you, cardiff.
