FROM THE DAILY MAIL ARCHIVE MAY 1, 1946 DR SCHACHT, Hitler’s former Finance Chief, giving evidence at Nuremberg, gave this descriptio­n of Hitler: ‘He was a semi-educated, semi-intellectu­al who juggled what knowledge he had. No doubt he was a man of genius in some respects, with intuition and ideas that few others had, but he was a mass psychologi­st of diabolical genius.’ MAY 1, 1962 WHAT do you call the thing in your smallest room? This, or something like it, is the question that interviewe­rs have been asking at houses all over the country. The national survey came up with this answer yesterday: 65 per cent of us call it the toilet; 15 per cent call it the lavatory; 4 per cent call it the W.C. and 2 per cent have pet names not recorded.

LADy Sarah Chatto, 54. Princess Margaret’s daughter and the Queen’s niece has been described as Her Majesty’s ‘ absolute favourite younger royal’, the only member of the family allowed to join her in her favourite hideaway, Craigowan Lodge near Balmoral Castle. An insider said: ‘Much giggling can be heard when they are together.’ The artist, 22nd in line to the throne, is thought to be the only royal to regularly use public transport. JOANNA LuMLey, 72 (pictured). Born in Kashmir, India, the actress starred in The New Avengers and was a Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. She wed first husband, comedy writer Jeremy Lloyd, two and a half weeks after meeting. It lasted less than a year.

MARTHA JANe CANNARy (1852-1903). The American frontiersw­oman was best known as Calamity Jane and played by Doris Day in the 1953 film of the same name. She wore men’s clothes, and beat them at poker by pretending to be ignorant of the rules. GLeNN FORD (1916-2006). The Canadian-born actor’s chemistry with Gilda co- star Rita Hayworth (pictured together) was so strong that a jealous studio boss worried the pair were having an affair and put secret microphone­s in Hayworth’s dressing room. The actors discovered the equipment and pretended they were.
