Lib Dem failed five times at ballot box

-

LORD Roberts of Llandudno was handed his seat in the Lords after unsuccessfully standing in five successive general elections.

The Methodist minister compared Theresa May with Adolf Hitler in Monday’s Lords debate as he claimed the UK could follow the path of Nazi Germany unless the PM’s powers were curtailed.

But the 82-year-old was rejected repeatedly by voters as he stood as the Liberal Democrats’ candidate in Conwy, North Wales, in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1992 and 1997.

Lord Roberts was ennobled in 2004 after being nominated by party members.

He pledged to use the role ‘to speak up for young people, the Welsh language and the forgotten victims of human rights abuses’.

He was a Methodist minister in Llandudno for 32 years until 2002. His political career began in the 1980s when he was elected as a local councillor in Aberconwy, while he also served as president of the Welsh Liberal Democrats.
