Uber banned in fourth UK city

-

UBER has been stripped of its operating licence in a fourth UK city.

Councillors in Brighton and Hove said the taxi firm was failing to keep passengers safe. They have laid down strict safety rules, including having CCTV inside vehicles. The city council’s licensing panel also said it had ‘significant concerns’ about a data breach at Uber.

The taxi-hailing mobile app concealed a hacking attack that affected 57million customers and drivers in 2016.

Jackie Quinn, who chairs the licensing panel, said: ‘Due to the data breach and the lack of commitment to using drivers licensed here, we were not satisfied Uber are a fit and proper person to hold an operator’s licence.’

Uber said it would appeal and it can operate in the meantime. London, Sheffield and York have refused the firm a licence – although Sheffield council leaders later reversed their decision.

Uber is also appealing against the potential loss of its London licence.
