Is it an own goal for the Football Association to sell off Wembley?

-

WHEN was Wembley Stadium put up for sale? Were other interested parties invited to tender? Who calculated the asking price? Did billionaire Shahid Khan make a speculative inquiry or was he advised it might be available? The fact that due diligence is under way indicates the negotiations have been going on for months before they were made public. The FA is acting in a way that is typical of its total lack of business acumen. If it needs a cash injection to clear its debts, how can it be sensible to sell the only fixed asset that generates income? PATRICK CHURCHILL, Goffs Oak, Herts. THERE are questions to be asked before the FA is allowed

to sell Wembley. Will the public money invested in its construction be repaid with interest? Will the England team be charged to play there? JOHN BOWYER, Lincoln. THE overseas sale of Cadbury and engineering firm GKN for billions and the loss of thousands of jobs raised barely a whisper from the powers that be. But sell off a football ground and all hell breaks loose. M. COHEN, Huntingdon, Cambs. WITH so many grasping interests within the game, I fear very little of the huge sums from the sale of Wembley will trickle down to grassroots football. TREvOR HOWARD, Wolverhampton. SELL Wembley and then build another stadium at half the price in the middle of the country that would be easier for everyone to get to. G. THOMPSON, Alfreton, Derbys. WHY shouldn’t Wembley Stadium be sold off? There are more pressing things in life and football is only a sport that not everyone likes. With any luck, the buyer will dismantle this eyesore and send it abroad. PETE WILLIAMS, Hayes, Middlesex. IF SHAHID KHAN wants to buy a true icon of this country, then sell him the House of Lords for a fiver, complete with the sitting tenants and their ermine robes and coronets thrown in as a free gift. B. WILSON, Crewe, Cheshire.
