Common sense wins in the war cabinet

-

THIS paper has made no secret of its grave reservations about the ‘ bonkers’ plan, drawn up by a Europhile civil servant, for a massively over-bureaucratic ‘New Customs Partnership’ with the EU.

So it can only be welcome that this harebrained compromise appears dead in the water (in its present form, at least) after yesterday’s showdown meeting of the Brexit war cabinet.

Thank heaven for commonsense ministers, including the new Home Secretary Sajid Javid, who are unafraid to speak their minds. Thank God, too, for a Prime Minister who is prepared to listen, as she orders officials to explore alternatives.

Yes, the Mail fully understands why Theresa May was attracted to the scheme, seeing it as her best hope of heading off a rebellion by Remoaners that might sabotage Brexit beyond repair.

But we hope and believe her fears are unfounded. For if she sticks to her red lines, can’t she count on the support of a few Labour MPs, prepared to stand up for their Brexiteer constituents and country?

And how many of even the most besotted Tory Europhiles would risk bringing down the Government, when the alternative is national ruin under Marxism?

On the long march to Brexit, this was a critical moment. She and her war cabinet should take pride in a decision that puts Britain’s interests first.
