Fit for a brand new princess: Meghan’s wedding carriage

- By Rebecca English Royal Correspondent

IT is a carriage with a special place in royal history. So it is fitting that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen the Queen’s Ascot Landau for their first appearance as a married couple.

They will make a tour of Windsor to allow thousands of well- wishers to catch a glimpse following their wedding ceremony at St George’s Chapel on May 19.

By the time Miss Markle sets foot in the Landau, she will no doubt feel like a princess – and she will be a duchess, as the Queen is expected to ennoble the American divorcee on the morning of her marriage.

Harry and his fiancee selected the newlyrefurbished carriage, built in 1883 for Queen Victoria, on a visit to the Royal Mews. The Landau, which normally carries the Queen at Royal Ascot, is one of two used at the

Kensington Palace also confirmed the route the newlyweds will take. Leaving St George’s Chapel at 1pm, they will travel down Castle Hill and through the town centre, returning along the Long Walk.

They will be drawn by four Windsor grey horses, with two more as outriders, and escorted by members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

A royal spokesman said the couple hope the short journey will show ‘their gratitude for everyone who has gathered in Windsor to enjoy the atmosphere of this special day’.

In the event of very wet weather, Harry and his bride will travel in the Scottish State Coach, built in 1830 for the Duchess of Teck, mother of Queen Mary.
