BARGAIN OF THE WEEK

Helderberg Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (£8, normally £10, Marks & Spencer) A STANDOUT red, and not just because of the can’t-miss-it label. Made by brilliant South African winemaker Marc Kent, this is crammed with cassis flavours and makes you want to fire up the barbecue.

WHITE WINE

Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2016 (£13.98, Asda) THE ‘reserve’ on the label hints that what’s inside is not your average New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Passion fruit, grapefruit and peach are followed by citrus flavours.

FOOD PAIRING: Spicy crab cakes.

RED WINE

The Society’s Sicilian Reserve Red 2014 (£8.25, The Wine Society) WORTH the Wine Society £40 joining fee — because this is one of the best sub-£10 bottles of red around. Made from Sicily’s Nero d’Avola grape, it’s full of ripe, bramble flavours.

FOOD PAIRING: Meaty pasta dishes.

ROSE

Mirabeau Rose 2017 (£7.99, normally £9.99, Waitrose) WHEN it comes to rose, you’re better off with the most recent vintage. The younger the wine, the fresher it is. Anyway, this is the latest release from an old favourite made in Provence. Fresh as a daisy.

FOOD PAIRING: Antipasti.
