Both clubs happy to make it a ‘Ray Wilkins Cup final’

- MIKE KEEGAN

MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea would ‘fully support’ a call to rename this season’s FA Cup final the ‘Ray Wilkins Cup final’ in honour of their former player — although the FA have no plans to do so. Wilkins, who starred for both clubs, died last month aged 61 after a heart attack and it was former United striker Frank Stapleton, speaking at Wilkins’ memorial service on Tuesday, who suggested that the FA should rename the final between United and Chelsea on May 19. Wilkins’ family have been invited to the match where he will be honoured. There will be a four-page tribute in the programme and the designs of both clubs’ banners will be dedicated to Wilkins. United and Chelsea will also provide footage for a tribute video to be broadcast on stadium screens before kick-off and fan groups from both clubs are working on a number of other ideas.
