Anti-democratic Lords

-

WHEN trying to justify their attempts to overturn a referendum result that clearly expressed the will of the electorate, parliamentarians such as Viscount Hailsham claim they are protecting our freedom.

That is, they are protecting the freedom and sovereignty of Parliament over the people.

The House of Lords is packed with people who believe freedom is something that lies in their hands and is under their control.

Having a referendum on the future of the House of Lords would not only curb the excesses of anti-democrats in the chamber, it would serve as a useful reminder to the elected House of Commons that it is only legitimate when it respects the will of the people when expressed through a referendum Parliament itself called for. MATTHEW SPENCER,

Biggleswade, Beds. NO, VISCOUNT Hailsham, this country’s future should not be determined by Parliament. It has already been determined by millions of ordinary, non-moat-owning people who voted to leave the EU.

Parliament exists to implement the will of the people. RICHARD BROOKES, Melbury Abbas, Dorset. SURELY it’s time for the public to demand an elected secondary chamber that has our interests at heart. Even my local pub darts team’s committee is voted in.

DAVID HAYES, Sandwich, Kent. I HAVE been a negotiator for 30 years aand have walked away from deals. In most cases, the other side came back with their tails between their legs and I got an agreement on my terms.

We should not stand for an antiquated institution trying to thwart the will of the people.

MICHAEL CARR, Ashford, Kent.
