Ozil wasn’t fit to wear shirt, says Keown
ARSENE WENGER could not hide his devastation after crashing out of the Europa League last night. Arsenal were left heartbroken in Madrid as they failed to deliver their outgoing manager a dream send-off, with Diego Costa firing Atletico Madrid into the final. Wenger admitted he was flattened by the loss, saying: ‘Like the team, I’m very sad and very disappointed, very frustrated as well.’ He added: ‘We were 1-0 up at home and conceded a stupid goal and tonight, with one minute to go to half-time, we conceded on the counter-attack. These are vital moments in a game of this stature. The suffering is strong tonight.’ After the defeat, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown was highly critical of the performance of Mesut Ozil. In his role as a BT Sport pundit,
Sportsmail’s Keown said: ‘I haven’t been happy with Ozil for some time. He picks and chooses his games and he was on the edge of things. ‘You can hide in that wide position and I was thinking are you going to get back for your team? Are you going to put a shift in? The great players I played with, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry, they worked hard as well. ‘Somebody needed to grab Ozil a long time ago, give him a shake and say, “We’re trying to get the ball to you, we are working for you, but you are not working for us”. I bet he doesn’t play again this season. He is not kidding me, that is not a proper performance. He’s not giving everything. ‘Wenger has invested an awful lot of money in him and I’m not seeing a performance to go with it. For me, he wasn’t fit to wear the shirt tonight and I’ve seen this a lot.’
