Twitter users’ passwords exposed by computer bug
TWITTER’S 330million users have been advised to change their passwords after a computer glitch left them vulnerable.
The firm said the bug resulted in passwords being stored ‘unmasked’ on its internal network.
An internal investigation found there was ‘no indication’ the details had been stolen or misused by insiders, the social network said. But it warned users to update their login information as a precaution.
Twitter did not say how many passwords were affected but it is understood the number was substantial and that they were exposed for several months.
The company said in a statement on Thursday: ‘We recently found a bug that stored passwords unmasked in an internal log.
‘We fixed the bug and have no indication of a breach or misuse by anyone. As a precaution, consider changing your password on all services where you’ve used this password.’
On its blog Twitter said: ‘We are very sorry this happened.’
