Give Meghan a chance to impress

-

THE Royal Wives Of Windsor on ITV was one of the cruellest programmes about the Royal Family I’ve ever seen. It featured all the women who have married into The Firm since the Queen Mother, highlighting their faults and mistakes and criticising their dress sense. There was barely suppressed ridicule and Rachel Johnson expressed surprise that modern Royals are marrying commoners. Doesn’t she know Princess Margaret married a photographer? The spectre of Wallis Simpson was brought up, with the inference that Meghan is rather like her. The perceived issues that make Meghan less than ideal were highlighted with all the subtly of a sledgehammer: she is mixed race, divorced, American, an actress, talks a lot, is older than Harry and as she is in her mid-30s, might not have children easily. Apparently, the role of a royal wife is to look pretty, say little and ensure the line is carried on as soon as possible after the wedding. One of the socalled experts was even concerned that Meghan might commit the faux pas of pouring her milk into her tea first! I don’t care about Meghan Markle’s background and am prepared to give her the opportunity to impress me. JOHN RUTHERFORD, Sevenoaks, Kent.
