Doubles delight for Brits

-

BRITISH pair Kyle Edmund and Cameron Norrie clinched their maiden tennis doubles title on the ATP Tour after defeating Wesley Koolhof and Artem Sitak in the Estoril open final. Edmund and Norrie, the British No 1 and No 3 respectively, had not dropped a set en route to the showpiece on the Portuguese clay. And the pair proved too strong for Holland’s Koolhof and New Zealander Sitak, prevailing 6-4, 6-2 in just under 70 minutes. At the Madrid open, British No 1 Johanna Konta beat world No 17 Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 7-5 and plays American Bernarda Pera in the second round.

ELIA VIVIANI won the third stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday, for his second sprint-finish victory in as many days. The Italian finished the 143-mile route through Israel’s Negev desert in just over five hours. Britain’s Chris Froome came home safely in the middle of the pack and sits 38sec behind leader Viviani. Meanwhile, Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet won the Tour de Yorkshire.
