Giant-killing for sunk Sunderland

- CRAIG HOPE at the Stadium Of Light

IF THIS was the FA Cup we would be calling it a giant-killing, League One lowering the gilded colours of the Premier League money men. Sunderland will be playing in the third tier next season but were easy winners against champions Wolves, who barely even feigned interest. Black Cats owner-in-waiting Stewart Donald was in the stands and will be left wondering if he needs to invest as much as first feared. He should not be fooled. They will be losing two of their scorers — loanees Ovie Ejaria and Ashley Fletcher — and face a fight to keep hold of the third, midfielder Paddy McNair having taken his tally to four from five after a fine solo strike. And this, do not forget, was just their third home win of a season in which relegation has been deserved. The inside story of this campaign will be released on Netflix in August but the documentary makers have yet to confirm if it will come with a viewing advisory. For Wolves and Nuno Espirito Santo, this mattered not, even if it did rank as their worst display of the season against the only team they have not beaten. Indeed, Nuno and his team left the Stadium of Light within 40 minutes of full time and did not bother to honour their press commitments. They head for Las Vegas after today’s open-top bus parade. Sunderland caretaker Robbie Stockdale said: ‘I said to the players, “If someone was coming for the first time today, what impression would you want to leave them with?” We finished on a positive.’
