£600m for Wembley is an ‘incredible bargain’

- By LAURA LAMBERT

tHE FA are under-pricing Wembley and shahid Khan would be getting an ‘incredible bargain’ if he bought it for £600million, former UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner has said.

He suggested the low price-tag could be a ploy to tempt other buyers, such as Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, but urged the FA to negotiate a better deal.

A leading property expert told Sportsmail last week that £ 600million looked ‘ very good value’ for American-Pakistani billionaire Khan ( right), who owns Fulham and nFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars.

the overall deal is said to be worth almost £1billion, as the FA would keep the Club Wembley debenture and hospitality business, valued at about £350m.

But Warner said: ‘I think it would be an incredible bargain if Khan was to pull off that deal, not a great deal for the FA. Look at the cost of the olympic stadium — £750m. the new tottenham stadium will cost £1bn.

‘ this is under- pricing Wembley by three or four hundred million quid. I can’t understand why the FA would contemplate it at that price. Maybe this is designed to flush out other buyers. ‘If you were Roman Abramovich, who is about to redevelop stamford Bridge, you would say, “Hang on a minute, can I buy Wembley for £600million and move Chelsea there and save a lot of money”.’

Warner, who was UK Athletics chairman between 2007 and 2017, also raised concerns about whether Wembley would remain the home of English football under new ownership.

speaking on Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek, he added: ‘It strikes me that if this deal is going to happen it has to happen at a far higher price and, emotionally, is it right for Wembley, the birthright of British football, to be sold in that way? I’m not sure it is.’

the Digital, Culture, Media and sport committee has announced it will probe Khan’s bid in July.
